Newsletter 16 - Biases

the C in NeuroLanguage Coaching®

I think unconscious bias is one of the hardest things to get at”

― Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Biases affect how you perceive and interact with the world around you. They also affect how you perceive and interact with yourself. Your greatest obstacle to language learning is you. As a language learner, biases - and how you deal with them- have a powerful influence on your learning journey.

Throughout this series, we've explored:

The N(euroscience): In the first part, we looked into the origins of biases, shedding light on their inner workings.

The L(anguage Learning): In the second newsletter, we discussed some of the  biases that can get in the way of your language learning.

Now, in this third and final part, we turn our attention to The C(oaching): We'll consider some effective strategies to combat or mitigate the impact of these biases - and ultimately, maximize your language learning.

If you're reading this newsletter, you're already doing the best thing you can do to overcome your self-limiting biases : Cultivating self-awareness and addressing biases you hold about yourself is the most important step towards "controlling" your biases, instead of them controlling you.

Keep in mind that anything you do to improve your brain health will help you overcome biases you have about yourself and about your ability to learn a language:

  • Breathe and relax

  • Exercise

  • Eat well (healthily)

  • Socialize with optimistic people

  • Maintain a Growth Mindset

  • Prioritize Sleep

Biases don't disappear, but they can be managed:

Self-Reflection: take the time to really think about your language learning journey. Identify areas where biases or negative self-perceptions get in the way of your progress.

Example: ask yourself "why aren't I enjoying it? Why is learning this language a drag?"

Challenge Negative Self-Talk: Go one step beyond self reflection. Zoom in on your inner dialogue. When self-criticism or negativity creeps in, challenge those thoughts by evaluating their basis in reality.

Example: "did everyone laugh at me last time I ordered food in the restaurant?"

Celebrate Achievements: No matter how small, acknowledging your language learning accomplishments bolsters positive self-perceptions and boosts self-esteem.

Example: "Had I ever been able to remember this word before? Had I ever tried ordering my food in French? I should be proud of myself. This is progress".

Set Realistic Goals: Establish achievable and practical language learning objectives. Unrealistic expectations can foster self-doubt and frustration.

Example: set yourself up for success "what little thing can I achieve that would actually make me happy"...and once that's achieved move on to the next thing.

Last but not least ;-)

Get a coach: If you feel that these are great steps to take but easier said than done, working with me can help : nothing beats support and accountability.

Deeply ingrained biases negatively impact your language learning journey and it's sometimes easier when you have someone by your side to help you overcome your biases and self-limiting beliefs. That's what I do. I don't "teach" you a language, I guide and support you in addressing your language learning challenges and biases - and feel a lot more confident.
